Project Description: The $95 million project consisted of a 24-story, cast-in-place concrete structure supported on a Type B micropile system. MTC services included complete geotechnical investigation, settlement and crack monitoring of adjacent building, vibration monitoring, and construction materials testing services including, micropile installation monitoring and testing of subgrade soils, concrete, soil density, masonry, grouting, steel, post-tension concrete inspection, and asphalt. MTC’s innovation began during the geotechnical phase when voided bedrock was encountered along the Grand River. To support the structure, a specialty deep foundation system with simultaneous void filling was used as we had developed for the adjacent Convention Center project. The micropiles were designed for up to 200 tons. We designed the building’s underdrain system and sized the pumps to resist flow from 100-yr flood in the adjacent Grand River and we completed stability analysis of the floodwall under the variety of loading conditions. We conducted pre-condition survey of an existing historic brick condominium building adjacent to the project along with settlement and crack monitoring as well as continuous vibration monitoring during construction.
