Structural Steel Services FAQ's

Structural steel inspection verifies that steel fabrication and erection meet project specifications and building code requirements. This includes inspection of welding, bolting, alignment, and member placement. It helps fill the gap between the structural engineer and contractor to verify the structural system is installed as designed.
The IBC/MBC requires special inspection of structural welding for certain projects. This includes verifying welder qualifications, welding procedures, and inspection of welds. Depending on the size of the weld and the type of weld including complete and partial joint penetrations, additional observations of fit-up and NDT testing may be required.
A Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) is a trained professional who inspects welding work to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards. The American Welding Society (AWS) provides the CWI certification for those individuals who demonstrate experience and education in the welding field understanding the welding standards and processes. CWIs evaluate weld quality, procedures, and welder qualifications.
Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) are prepared the respective company performing the work,define how welding is to be performed, including materials, techniques, and parameters. These procedures must be tested and qualified before use. They ensure consistent and reliable weld quality.
Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) document the testing used to qualify a welding procedure. They demonstrate that a procedure can produce acceptable welds. PQRs are required for code compliance.
Welder qualifications verify that a welder has the skills to produce code-compliant welds. Testing is performed under controlled conditions and witnessed by a CWI. Qualified welders are required for structural steel work under most codes.
Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a process that involves inspection, testing, and evaluating materials and structures without causing damage. It is used to detect defects, verify quality, and assess structural integrity. NDT is commonly used in structural steel, concrete, and infrastructure inspections. For steel, these methods include visual testing (VT), magnetic particle testing (MT), liquid penetrant testing (PT), and ultra-sonic testing (UT).
Magnetic particle testing (MT) is a nondestructive testing method used to detect surface and near surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as iron, steel, and nickel. A magnetic field is induced in the material, and fine iron particles are applied revealing discontinuities such as cracks. It is commonly used for weld inspections and steel components.
Liquid penetrant testing (PT) detects surface-breaking defects in both ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic materials. A dye is applied to a clean surface and capillary action draws penetrate into cracks, then a developer is used to pull the dye back out, highlighting the defects. It is useful for identifying fine surface flaws that may not be visible.
Ultrasonic testing (UT) uses high-frequency sound waves to detect internal flaws in materials. It can identify voids, cracks, and thickness variations within many materials. UT is widely used for structural weld evaluation, and can also be used for thickness measurements and corrosion mapping.
Visual testing (VT) involves direct observation of materials and welds to identify visible defects. Inspectors look for cracks, misalignment, and workmanship issues. It is typically the first step in any inspection process.
Bolting inspection verifies that high-strength bolts are installed correctly. This includes checking torque, tensioning methods, and installation procedures. The International Code Council (ICC) provides Special Inspector certification S1 for Structural Steel and Bolting to help building officials evaluate the qualifications of Bolting Inspector.
Fabrication inspection ensures steel components are manufactured according to specifications. This includes checking dimensions, welds, and materials. It helps prevent issues before materials arrive on site. The IBC/MBC has special inspection requirements for fabrication which become more stringent at facilities without an accredited quality control system.
